For the past 10 years Monash has been the lead agent for the NCRIS-funded Australian National Data Service (ANDS), in partnership with the Australian National University and CSIRO. As a result of ANDS’s efforts, research data has become more valuable and research has been strengthened.

This month ANDS has transitioned as one of the foundation components of the newly formed Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), together with NeCTAR, and Research Data Services (RDS). In this transition year Monash, Melbourne and Queensland universities will be joint lead agents of the ARDC.

This month ANDS has transitioned as one of the foundation components of the newly formed Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), together with NeCTAR, and Research Data Services (RDS). In this transition year Monash, Melbourne and Queensland universities will be joint lead agents of the ARDC.

The ARDC continues and strengthens the work of ANDSNeCTAR and RDS by meeting the needs of data-intensive, cross-disciplinary and global collaborative research.

This new and wider approach builds on improved research data delivered by ANDS, national data services and storage provided by RDS, and collaboration environments such as cloud computing and virtual laboratories provided by NeCTAR.

The ANDS Executive Director, Dr Ross Wilkinson, said with strong government commitment and vision, Australia today has a world leading role in research data and research data capacity. Research institutions have substantially greater research data management capacity than five years ago.

“From grappling with a data management problem, Australian researchers now have an ability to use a stronger, richer set of data assets for more data intensive research.”

“Through ANDS’s partnerships with most Australian research institutions, we have led a major lift in system capacity to create, manage, use and publish research data,” Dr Wilkinson said.

The newly formed ARDC will continue the leadership, partnerships and international engagement strategies in order to transform Australian research data and capacity.
